Camera crews swarmed an upper King Street business complex Monday morning to begin filming an upcoming Netflix movie starring Marlon Wayans.
The Internet streaming company announced in September it had approved the production of “Naked,” a romantic comedy set in Charleston starring Wayans, who also is co-producing.
The crew of about 100 filmed scenes during its first week in production at the downtown complex near The Daily, a cafe at 652 King St.
The production schedule was delayed about a week because of Hurricane Matthew, according to Scott Watson, director of cultural affairs with the city of Charleston. Other film sites the crew discussed with city staff include Wragg Square, The Mills House and the Gaillard Center, but permits haven’t been issued yet since the storm put things “in flux,” Watson said.
The movie is a remake of a 2000 Swedish film titled “Naken,” which was partly inspired by the American comedy, “Groundhog Day.”
Wayans plays Rob Anderson, described as “a charming man-child who wakes up on his wedding day, naked in an elevator, reliving the hour before the ceremony over and over again.” The film’s co-star, Regina Hall, also shared the silver screen with Wayans in the “Scary Movie” film series.
Netflix said this is its first large production in South Carolina.
Tom Clark of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism’s Film Commission said last month Netflix has opened an office in North Charleston to prepare for the project.
The production expects to be working in the Lowcountry for about a month and a half, he said.
