Camera crews swarmed Atlanta, GA Monday morning to begin filming an upcoming Marvel Studios film starring Michael B. Jordan but will move production to Charlotte, NC in November.
Marvel Studios announced in September it had approved the production of “Black Panther,”a film about the new ruler of the advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must defend his land from being torn apart by enemies from outside and inside the country.
The crew of about 125 filmed scenes during its first week in production at the downtown complex near Marin Luther King Blvd.
The production schedule was delayed about a week because of Hurricane Matthew, according to Ryan Coogler, director of the movie. Other film sites the crew discussed with city staff include Wragg Square, Unity Drive and the Dawson, but permits haven’t been issued yet since the storm put things “in flux,” Coogler said.
Jordan plays the best friend of T’Challa, and a warrior in the Wakanda military. The film’s co-star, Chadwick Boseman, played T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War.
Marvel Studios said this is its second large production in Atlanta, GA and will be it’s first in Charlotte, NC.
Georgia Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism’s Film Commission said last month Marvel has opened an office in Norcross to prepare for the project.
The production expects to be working in the Atlanta for about a month and a half, he said and in Charlotte until mid Jan 2017.
